Volvo are streamlining and standardising the model names for fully electric cars, which means the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge will get a new nameplate going forward.

Introducing the EX40 and EC40
Renaming the XC40 and C40
Why the change? It is all part of their commitment to becoming a fully electric car maker by 2030. They are simplifying things for customers, so their electric models can be easily identified. As of today, the pure electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge will be renamed to EX40 and EC40. With these new nameplates, their electric stalwarts now seamlessly fit with their other fully electric (EV) models: the EX30, the EX90, and the EM90.
Recharge, Reimagined
The Recharge badge isn’t just removed from the EX40 and EC40. Going forward, Recharge is also cut from their highly popular plug-in hybrid models, which are now denoted simply by the T6 or T8 suffix indicating different levels of power output. The XC40 name remains for internal combustion-powered variants of the model.
This change makes it even easier for customers to understand which models are fully electric and which are hybrids as they shop for their next Volvo car.
Extra features to come
We're not just changing names – we're also introducing exciting new features. For our EX40 and EC40 Twin Motor variants, we're rolling out a Performance software pack that boosts power output by 25kW for faster acceleration. Plus, you'll get unique pedal mapping for quicker accelerator response and a special 'Performance' drive mode to unlock the full 325kW.
And guess what? You can now upgrade to this Performance software pack right from the comfort of your home. In available markets, we offer the Performance software as an optional upgrade pack via the Volvo Cars app. Simply use the Volvo Cars app to order the upgrade for your new EX40 or EC40, or for previous model year 2024 C40 and pure electric XC40 Recharge cars.
But that's not all we're doing to enhance your driving experience. We're also investing in improvements to our hybrid products, with more efficient engine combustion cycles for our B5 mild hybrid petrol variants of XC60 and XC90.
And if you liked the XC60 Black Edition we revealed last year, keep your eyes peeled, because the same treatment is coming to the EX40, EC40 and the XC40 models. The Black Edition models come with Onyx Black paint, high gloss black badging, 20-inch five-spoke alloys in high gloss black and the choice between microtech or textile charcoal interiors.
