The BYD Seal is a very compelling package!
It’s 5pm on a Friday and I’ve been handed the keys to a brand-new demonstrator for review, it’s a little dark outside and noticeably chilly but as I unplug the power cable and get to grips with the controls, I immediately begin to feel impressed. BYD may have well cracked the code here and produced the Tesla Model 3 fighter that its competition hasn’t managed until now.
I’ve driven a lot of electric cars in my time, but nothing had quite prepared me for the BYD SEAL. This sleek, sporty sedan is a revelation impeccably built and remarkably comfortable, from the moment I slid behind the wheel, I knew I was in for a treat.
The SEAL’s design is a mixture of restraint and distinctive flair. The smooth, aerodynamic lines, flush door handles and intricate alloy wheels enhance the look and feel of this sports saloon, however the wide stance and distinctive daytime running lights add a touch luxury making the BYD easy to identify. The cabin is equally impressive, with high-quality materials, excellent Dynaudio surround sound system and minimalist aesthetic. The central (rotating) infotainment system is intuitive, responsive and most importantly, easy to interface with. Most impressive was the comfort level offered by the heated and electrically adjustable seats!
But, it’s the driving experience that really sets the SEAL apart. It’s no secret that EV’s are generally more powerful than their equivalent combustion powered competitors and here the SEAL doesn’t disappoint. Given the opportunity, it can rocket you from a standstill to 60mph in as little as 3.8 seconds. The dynamics however are a genuine surprise, poised and well damped the ride quality is more akin to a German manufacturer, whilst switching through the driving modes (Eco, Normal, Sport) gave a broad variance in set up making the SEAL genuinely enjoyable on my drive home.
